Home cooking – bread, mixture of wurst, crisps and a cup of tea – delicious!
Lunch at the buffet restaurant at KaDeWe, the famous department store in Berlin. We paid for our food by weight. This lot came to about 38 euros! But we were still hungry! Shared one serve of strawberries and cream for 5 Euros
Dinner in typical German pub – pork knuckle and mixed grill, German white wine and of course German beer
Fassbender and Rausch chocolate restaurant. We sampled
hot chocolate, iced coffee and a diabetic cake, would you believe!
Gastronomical highlights of Berlin have included:
- currywurst sausage – now a Berlin institution but around since the 60s – Indian meets German sausage – sausage sliced, covered with tomato based gravy and then sprinkled with curry powder and served on a paper plate with bread roll – apparently there is now a Currywurst Museum that has opened!
- Berliner, German beer – common serve is 0.5 litre and biggger
- pork knucke the size of a huge lamb shank
- fried potatoes
- apple cake
- bread in all its varieties
- many varieties of “wurst” (salamies, cold meats)
- cherry juice
