Not a museum but a signficant landmark in Berlin – the Brandenburg Gate with Quadriga, the symbol of victory with Nike, looking down on the French embassy!
Anthony at the Pergamon museum. I can’t believe they let you take photos but you are not allowed to use a flash!
Berlin is home to world famous museums and we managed to sample a few.
Highlights for us were:
- Pergamon museum – Pergamon altar, Ishtar gate, antiquities purloined from Greece and Rome
- Bode museum – sculptures and paintings
- Altes musuem (old museum) – Greek and Roman art including sculptures, pottery, bronyes
- Anne Frank museum – good for students, dealing with discrimination and identity
- Berlin story – highly interactive museum about history of Berlin
- German history museum – two huge floors of history of German people through posters, books, paintings, sculptures, artefacts
- Guggenheim gallery – homage to the square
- Old national gallery – mixture of German and European art in a beautiful building
Missed some galleries because of closures on Mondays, particularly the New National Art Gallery. We were also sorry that we would not be in Berlin for the opening of the New Museum featuring an extensive Egyptian collection, including bust of Nephrititi.
