Away in April 2011 – Day 11 British Museum

London, British Museum, Covent Garden, Leicester Square Underground Station, Tottenham Court Road

Monday, 11 April 2011

Lateish start this morning as waited for washing to finish and wifi to be connected.

Then walk across Westminster bridge, bought a map of London at Parliament shop and tube to Tottenham Court Road and walk to British Museum.

British Museum has undergone redevelopment in 2001 with new Great Court – a central atrium with shops and food outlets, reminiscent of the Louvre.

The British Museum is quite overwhelming – there is so much to see – it’s the breadth of the collection that is amazing, epitomized in the advertising posters promoting the Museum’s history of the world in a 100 objects.

We needed invigorating in between exhibits – Thai lunch around the corner and afternoon tea on Level 3 that we had read about in the SMH travel section.

Late afternoon and tube to Covent Garden, site of original fruit markets. We had just missed the Tuesday antique market but just as well as I have collected enough plates!

Walked to Leicester Square and decided that three London shows in a week is really enough. We were tempted with news that Benedict Cumberbatch (recently in TV series Sherlock Holmes) was playing in Frankenstein but all sessions for this week had sold out.

Decided that we probably needed a quiet night after all the walking today. So onto crowded trains to Vauxhall and quick stop off at Portugese deli on Albert Embankment for salami, pate and a couple of peaches.
