Day 16 – Sights of Southwark for free

Southwark, London Bridge Underground Station, Tate Modern, Lambeth Palace, The Globe Theatre, Borough Market

Early start with just a cup of tea, then tube to London Bridge for breakfast at Borough markets. This is an artisan style food market under London Bridge. Bought raspberries, blackberries and current buns for later. Breakfasted at Roast on full borough breakfast, two for one special. Delicious food in a picturesque setting overlooking the markets below.

From the markets, walked to Southwark Cathedral. This is one of the oldest churches in London (since 1300s) and starting point for pilgrimages to Canterbury. There is also a shop and cafe!

Then passed the Golden Hind, a reconstruction of St Francis Drake’s ship, now docked and available for hire for functions.

Onto the reconstructed Globe Theatre. Didn’t do the tour but competed in the shop with tour group of German students!

Further along the river, we came to the Tate Modern – an imposing building that was once a power plant and is now home to changing collection of modern art. Excellent! Had some refreshments on an outside terrace on Level 3 looking out to London skyline across the river and the spectacular bridge to the gallery.

Onward along Blackfriars and Lambeth Roads to the Imperial War museum. We focused on thematic exhibits around WW1 and the Holocaust. The Holocaust exhibition is ranked in the top three in the world, alongside Yad Haden in Jerusalem and the Holocaust museum in Washington. Very well done.

Then wound our way back along Lambeth Road to Lambeth Gardens and Lambeth Palace. We weren’t able to gain entry to the Palace but instead went into the Garden museum, housed in a decommissioned church. Beautiful interior with blond woods toning with old stone and stained glass windows. Outside lovely little knot garden. We had to buy souvenirs because they let us in for free as there was only half an hour to closing!

Then evening in, planning the next stage of our holiday to Copenhagen tomorrow – what a lot of souvenirs – hope the bags are not
