Day 15 – St Pauls And Love Never Dies
St Paul’s Cathedral, Charing Cross Underground Station
Friday, 15 April 2011
So much to see and do in London that today we had a list!
First was the National Trust Blewcoat Gift shop in Caxton Street behind Queens Gate. It was originally built in 1709 as a school for poor children: now it’s home to souvenirs from many National Trust properties.
Next was St James Park. Bought food to picnic on in the park at a total cost of £5.00 (baguette, fruit and cakes) but view was free.
After lunch continued along the Mall to Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery. Many postcard views so many photos taken! Tea in the National Gallery disappointing because of disposable cups/ cutlery despite the beautiful setting!
Break from walking to take the tube from Charing Cross to Oxford Circus in search of a BBC shop. We were unlucky and no shop was found.
Then tube to St Paul’s and St Paul’s Cathedral. The climb to the Whispering Gallery was well worth it for the spectacular view of the interior. Then another climb to an outside viewing verandah and spectacular 360 degree views of London. Beautiful!
Then tube to the Strand. Dinner at the Wellington, an Edwardian style pub with an upstairs dining room. I had sausages and mash whilst Anthony had cod with peas, beans, asparagus and smashed potatoes. Drank elderflower cordial with soda – delicious.
Finally 2nd row seats for Love never dies at Adelphi Theatre on The Strand – brilliant! Must see again in Melbourne.
