Day 20 – Copenhagen and Koge

Copenhagen, Koge, Danish Museum of Art and Design

Wednesday, 20 April 2011

Walk to Dybbolsbro Station for train to Koge, a beautiful mediaeval market town about 30 minutes away. Why Koge? Found Museum of Art in Public Places in our brochures but after further googling saw that Koge was also home to oldest surviving half wooden houses in Denmark.

Wednesday is market day and the market square had many food and flower stalls. Beautifully displayed flowers – so many bulbs but also lavenders and other flowers. Many locals bought trays of potted daffodils and were transporting these home in the basket on the front of their cycles!

Lunch at Cafe Vivaldi – huge portions – omelet for me and Vivaldi Tallerken (buffet) for Anthony. I also had an Iskakao – Danish version of mocca complete with decoration!

Then strolled along blended mediaeval streets to finish at the Museum of Koge, housed in a mediaeval wattle and daub building. Bought our one and only Viking souvenir – a tea towel!

Train to Osterport Station to see the little mermaid. Beautiful waterfront location and walk. The little mermaid is quite petite but very lovely. Further around the canal is a much more grown-up and buxom version!

Then search for Danish Museum of Art and Design by which time Anthony was tired out – being a tourist is incredibly hard work. He had a sleep on one of the seats provided whilst I did a quick dash around in the half hour hour before closing time. Lovely museum, with galleries around a central courtyard. I focused on the ceramics and more Danish design!

Homeward bound, through Stroget taking in the squares and the architecture, decided that yes we did have the energy to see the Tivoli Gardens. Fortified by a glass of wine for me and beer and takeaway frankfurt for Anthony, we strolled around the rides and amusement arcades and beautifully landscaped gardens.

Back in our apartment, we reflected that we had had a really big day!
