Jeonju

Day 3 – Jeonju

Jeonju

Saturday, 7 April 2012

Best night’s sleep for quite a few days until 8.00am on our firm bed and soft pillows. Lovely hot shower and then down to the ground floor for buffet-style breakfast. Lots of Korean and western options. We both ended up with a fusion, starting with bircher museli with poached pineapple and tea and coffee. I continued my seafood theme with seafood porridge and cooked mackerel and miso soup. And lots of other plate fillers – salad and smoked salmon and best fried mushrooms.

we would certainly recommend the hotel for stop overs – very attentive staff and really sets you up for the start of your holiday.

We took the free limousine transfer to the airport where we found the KTX desk and exchanged our evoucher for a 7-day rail pass. The lady at the counter was so helpful that we ended up booking all legs of our rail travel in Korea and bus ticket to Yongsan railway station.

Sitting at the railway station in a patch of sun waiting for the train at 13.20 to Jeonju.

The train was quite comfortable. We are traveling economy class and the carriage had many women with young children. Views along the way were of intensive food production with tilled fields and hot houses. Wehad to change trains but this was very straightforward as the next train left from the same platform.

At Jeonju we took a taxi as our accommodation for 2 nights at the Jeonju Tourist Hotel was at some distance from the train station. The taxi driver wasn’t sure where he was going – he kept looking at our piece of paper and repeating the word “tourist”. I think he even phoned a friend and kept repeating that word “tourist”. We arrived finally after about 20 minutes.

The hotel is a little tired. Our room is a deluxe Korean style ondol room with under floor heating. The young man at the desk had the most English but this was quite limited. he did give us an English map though which was very helpful.

We went for a walk and found ourselves at the local market. Dinner at a place frequented by locals – only one dish on the menu – a kind of broth of stewed pork and blood sausage with side dishes of rice, kimchi and greens.
