Day 19 – Rhodes Greece

Rhodes

Friday, 4 October 2013

We decided to pass on our 8 hour tour today as feeling slightly under the weather – a few too many Harvey wall bangers last night!

Instead we spent the day in the UNESCO world heritage listed old city of Rhodes.

We were able to walk in off the ship through the city walls. It’s a well preserved fortress town that had been held by the Knights of St John.

Of particular interest was the Archeological Museum of Rhodes which was housed in what had been a medieval hospital.

It had an extensive ancient collection of pottery from across the whole island of Rhodes, and a lovely statue of the Venus of Rhodes washing her hair.

Also some beautiful mosaics.

We walked down the street of the knights which has been preserved from commercialism, whereas much of the city is full of tourist shops for tourist ships!

We stopped for an expresso and baclava at a local cafe with free wifi and caught up with emails from our daughters who have brought Merlin our cat home. He is very skinny but glad to be home and from all reports enjoying our gas fire, sitting on Anthony’s woollen rug, and lying in a patch of sun in our upstairs study.

It was easy to get lost in the old city as we wandered looking for a way to climb the city walls. Alas we didn’t find the way onto the walls but did find a seafood taverna for lunch. We had delicious grilled octopus and house salad.

Back on board in time for afternoon tea and trivia – it has become a ritual. Then a liquid seaweed wrap for me at the Canyon Spa was the perfect antidote for all those toxins!

Then a very light dinner at the Compass Rose restaurant because it is nice to dress up and go out. I had a delicious polenta soufflé followed by a salad whilst Anthony had a beef consommé followed by pea gnocchi. But no wine for me!

Seas were a little bumpy but we both slept deeply.
