Day 27 – Lazy day in Istanbul
Istanbul
Saturday, 12 October 2013
Slept in and had a relaxing morning reading with tea and baclava in bed as being a tourist in Istanbul is very tiring!
Then showered and headed out for a late lunch. Decided to stop at the cafe Yemek kulibu (food club) recommended by Ahmet’s assistant along the pedestrian street as we were very hungry by this stage. Upstairs on the first floor the decor was gold mirrors and wall sconces.
But the food was disappointing – meat balls with salad and chips with beer for Anthony and fried goat’s cheese salad for me with iced tea
More European style geared to a younger market – I can see why it would appeal to Ahmet’s assistant. Very glad we hadn’t saved this one for a special occasion!
Slow meander down to the Galata bridge, stopping for those last must-have souvenirs.
Then a second much later lunch in one of the fish cafés under Galata bridge – the grilled calamari and buttered shrimp with bread and beer was delicious.
Anthony was reluctant to stop as the waiters along here can be very intimidating and fish is not his favourite food.
But very glad we did as we witnessed a fish fall from the sky (it dropped off a line from the bridge) and we also fed a few scraps to one of Istanbul’s many scrawny cats.
Then walked across Galata bridge to check out where we can catch a ferry for Asia tomorrow and then a slow meander back up those steep streets to our apartment.
Feeling very virtuous as we walked all the way today!
