Day 28 – Lunch in Asia
Istanbul, Kadikoy
Sunday, 13 October 2013
Today we slept in again and I did some washing and blogging whilst Anthony made a valiant attempt to finish his book “Two Brothers”.
The day seemed a bit cooler and cloudier than yesterday and a bit quieter. We walked down the pedestrian street
and across the Galata bridge for the 1.00pm ferry to Kadikoy and the Asian side of Istanbul.
The ferry ride was ridiculously cheap – under 2 lira each way and the Istanbul card works for all forms of transport.
I think most people on board were locals.
The Asian side seems far less touristy as we saw no souvenirs but lots of cafés, shops selling iPad and iPhone accessories and of course lots of clothing outlets.
We found the food markets too late as our plan was to buy the ingredients for a picnic.
Instead we ate out at a takeaway place owned by international company Sodexo which has the concession for the Olympic stadium in Sydney and used to run the school canteen at OLMC! Pizza was delicious with Turkish tea.
Later we had an excellent Turkish coffee at a small place that makes the coffee on hot coals.
Then bought some baclava for home.
Lovely ferry ride home where we sat outside with our feet up on the rails, like the locals.
But oh the steep steps up to the start of the pedestrian street!
