This was our longest day of travelling, interspersed with an interesting guided tour and lunch.
On the way to Syracuse, we stopped for a guided tour of Piazza Amerina, viewing the stunning mosaics in Villa Romana del Casale, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Fantastic guide named Josie who obviously had a great historical knowledge and a way of imparting it!
The site was enormous! Not sure who the owner of the villa was but he had to have been extremely influential because of the size of the villa and the quality of the decorations. The mosaics were amazing.
We had a bonus lunch stop at an Agriturismo, or “agricultural tourism / agritourism” – lunch for 15 euro per person included wine, water and best of Sicilian produce.
On the way to our hotel we were lucky to start seeing Mt Etna.
She’s always smoking!
Our hotel in Siracusa – the Grand Hotel Villa Ponti Siracusa – is the best so far! Lovely balcony overlooking the limestone quarry so critical to the development of Siracusa from the 7th century BC
We had a long walk into Ortigia which is the island connected to Syracuse – before a delicious included dinner at the hotel.
