Free day in Syracuse

Lovely to have a free day to wander on our own in Syracuse.

After a leisurely breakfast in our hotel, we took our washing to a laundromat on Ortigia – only 7.50 euro to wash and dry one load.
We had a couple of hours at the archeological museum and took in the prehistory of Syracuse and the Greek  period. Interesting building built around a hexagonal but no cafe or shop!

Had a late lunch at a place near the local markets that we’d seen yesterday. We had a cheese plate, glass of red wine, extra olives and an espresso to finish.

It was great to have the time to walk around Ortigia and see the island from different vantage points. There is even a Norman castle right at the end if the island!

Didn’t need dinner. Instead bought a local drink – chinotto – for consumption back at our hotel and an early night. Off to Taormina tomorrow.
