Sleep in and then morning tour of two Sicilian villages perched over Taormina – Savoca and Forza d’Agro. These are two traditional Sicialian villages that served as sets for Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather.” We will have to watch the movie again! It was a winding road to the top with lots of hairpin bends but our coach driver negotiated these with great skill.
First, Savoca. This mediaeval village has wonderful panoramic views of the Mediterranean sea. Can you see the artwork to Coppola?
I had the best cannelloni in Sicily at this cafe which served as a set for the Godfather – it was full of nuts!
We continued on to Forza d’Agrò, another “hidden” Sicilian village. More spectacular scenery and an opportunity to sample more Italian wine and olives!
Back at our hotel, we had time for an afternoon excursion back into Taormina even though Anthony would have preferred to stay at the hotel and read his book! Annoying to have to book the shuttle and nominate when we wanted to come back to the hotel but Taormina is a very popular part of Sicily as we saw by the number of tourists who are already here in the shoulder season.
We had our final tour group dinner at a nearby cafe this evening. We got there about 7.15pm but Sicilian families only start arriving after 8.30pm! Pleasant evening where the red wine flowed freely. Delicious antipasto plate.
