Beautiful sunny day in Roma and windy enough to dry the last of our washing on the balcony.
We caught the metro to the Circus Maximus with views across to the Roman Forum.
We walked to the Trastavere area of Rome – the Mediaeval part of Rome – which has lots of relatively inexpensive places to eat. We stopped at one which had a set price for 3 courses including a drink. Our pasta and Anthony’s pork and roast potatoes were good but I didn’t like my fish at all. But the glass of wine was good.
It would be a nice area to stay in. The area seems less touristy and certainly quieter than where we were on Sunday.
An interesting church which drew Anthony in – the basilica Di Santa Maria in Trastevere which had Roman and Byzantine influences
You see a lot of pedlars on the side of the road. Some of these must be legal whilst others aren’t. We saw one lot with their wares set up on cardboard boxes who quickly dismantled everything when they spotted a police car coming down the road. There is also a strong army presence. Anthony thought the guards we saw at the Metro stations were from the Alpine division of the Italian army.
We also walked across several bridges over the River Tiber including the Ponte Palantino and walked along the river. But the London plane trees were in flower and the wind made our noses run!
Lots of walking, window shopping, a caffe and dolce stop, and purchase of final sourvenirs before heading home to pack.
