Cyprus

Day 17 – Cyprus

Limassol District, Kourion Stadium

Wednesday, 2 October 2013

We were up at 6am this morning so were able to watch our progress into Limassol Cyprus.

We had a morning shore excursion to two archeological sites. The first was the archeological site of Kourion, a very textensive site but we spent time only at the house of Eustolius a Roman house dating from about the 3rd or 4th century with some well preserved frescos,

and a reconstructed theatre which is still used today for performances.

Then onto the Temple of Apollo dedicated to Apollo of the forest. This contained a couple of preserved capitals unique in Mediterranean architecture.

At both sites we were able to get quite close to ancient stones and our Cypriot guide gave us enough free time to wander. Both sites had beautiful water and landscape views.

Then onto Omodos Village, where we first visited the Greek Orthodox Church and wine museum before having about an hour of free time. The village very quaint and quiet, and looked like it hadn’t changed in hundreds of years, with elderly women sitting in their shops making their famous lace. We tasted some local produce and looked through many shops selling local handicrafts.

Overall it was a very nicely balanced tour and we got to see quite a bit of the Cypriot landscape. Cyprus seems a lot less touristy than Athens and would be perfect for an extended holiday. They even drive on the left hand side!
