A day of indulgence

I had started nursing a head cold so Anthony let me sleep in. When I woke the sun had already risen and it had the makings of a beautiful day.

The late start seemed to give us permission to stay in bed longer. We had breakfast in bed and, with the light flooding through our window, we snuggled under the covers and got stuck into our books. As time passed, we decided that lunch at a local pub would be the way to go.

The Queens Arms at Corton Debnam is 5km and 15 minutes away via winding country lanes. It is a Michelin star award-winning restaurant in the quaint village of Corton Debnam in the Dorset countryside. As we neared the pub, we saw lots of cars already parked along the road and had to drive further down to park outside the old post office. So lots of people had had the same idea as us!

The pub had a lovely feel. It was already full when we came in but there were probably other rooms available. We found a seat near the front door, perched around a wine barrel and settled ourselves in. We had a really good vantage of the bar on our left and the open fire place to the right. The best seat in the house was on the left hand side of the fireplace where we could see two wing chairs with a middle-aged women ensconced. There was an assortment of tables and seating – some low tables with pouffs and other tables with chairs. Many people looked like they had been tramping and many had their dogs in tow. The provenance of all their produce is articulated in their menu.

We ordered a bottle of Viognier from Chile, dill cured salmon with dressed prawns, apple and radish for Anthony followed by slow roasted pork belly with crackling, champ potato, heritage carols and apple sauce. Pressed roast chicken and foie gras with prune jam and garlic crostini for me, followed by dressed Portland crab with buttered punk potatoes, preserved lemon aioli and salad.

The food was superb!

After the main course we noticed the couple near the fire vacating their places so were able to get the place by the fire for dessert and coffee.  Anthony ordered a cheese plate and dark chocolate fondant with bitter mousse and vanilla cream for me and coffees.

Absolutely decadent! What a lovely way to spend the day!
