Anthony ordered snow for my birthday and it arrived whilst we were having breakfast and again while we were having dinner.
We are in Cologne staying at a small boutique hotel called the Humbolt 1 which is very close to the railway station, museums and shops. Anthony thinks it looks like a high class brothel with its chandeliers, gleaming sliver, black furniture and plush furnishings with splashes of pink – and is not our style at all which he thinks is more traditional! Never having been in a brothel, high class or otherwise, I don’t have a means of comparing but it is a bit different and the service is the right mix or warmth and attention without being obsequious. It seems to be run by the owner, a woman, and another woman who helps out when the owner is having a break.
The bar doubles as the breakfast room and gleams with crystal chandeliers. The breakfast buffet is set out on a black piano and the bar. It’s a continental breakfast with juice, coffee, selection of breads, cold meats and cheeses, some vegetables (tomatoes, cucumber, capsicum, olives etc..), birscher museli make with quinoa, fresh fruit (mandarins, pineapple, kiwi fruit), yoghurts, cereals, and eggs if you are so inclined.
There are two separate entrances to the hotel – one to the bar and the either to the guest rooms. I wore my coat down as you have to go outside to go to breakfast and in the other door, The waitress took my coat and then brought out a small chocolate torte with a lit pink candle and sang happy birthday to me. She also opened a bottle of German champagne for us so we had a champagne breakfast. Anthony couldn’t have planned it better. It was a lovely touch!
But my best present was the snow. Only small flurries but snow nevertheless!

Happy Burthday, Teresa. How wonderful to have snow. Xxx
